Brown:Music Info

Brown:Music are based in London, and have been gigging on the capital’s live music circuit for the last 2 years with a set-up of 2 vocals & guitar.  More recently they have added up-right bass & percussion to the line up for certain gigs still to be in-keeping with their expressive acoustic vibe.

Mixed-race twin sisters Natasha & Loretta front Brown:Music, who have worked as singers in a variety of performance capacities for the last 10 years including session work, TV, live and tours (working with artistes such as Sting, Diana Ross, Lemar, Will Young and Madonna).  Joined by Malaysian born Johann Ting, who is a talented guitarist with a unique percussive feel to his playing & vocals that perfectly compliment the girls’ tight harmonies; they are a winning combination.

Brown:Music is not just a name, it’s a concept. The girls grew up experiencing and listening to the music of both ‘White’ and ‘Black’ cultures, and naturally the music they now create is a reflection of both worlds. When you listen to their songs your ears will taste a unique fusion of flavours, from soul, to folk, to rock.  The girls feel strongly that they don’t want their sound to be forced into one distinct genre or another.  They’re eager to cross boundaries, free to dip in and out of other musical styles.    The girls explain that the band name and it's meaning tell a lot of what they're all about and the kind of music they are producing;

Johann brings his unusual and distinctive acoustic and electric guitar stylings to Brown:Music, as well as providing live backing vocals. Hailing from Malaysia and Perivale, he has experience in musical theatre, the London club scene, teaching and songwriting, and has worked with artists as diverse as Kirsty Crawford, Daniel Bedingfield, David Grant and Matt Redman.

"Brown:Music is a sound and an identity. It stems from who we are expressed through the mixture that is in our culture and our voices of black meeting white. It's not full-on Urban or Soul and it's not Folk or Rock but in fact it has an element of all of those genres. The Brown:Music concept is all about not feeling forced to fit into one specific category or another - whether that be your music, your dress-sense or your attitude. We write our own songs and they are powerful, true and expressive. We believe we've got a unique sound and something new to offer the industry"

However, the Brown:Music concept goes further than the music.  ‘Brown’ represents Tash and Loretta’s own non-category they came up with to encompass the fusion of everything they are. The great news is you don’t have to be Brown-skinned to be ‘Brown’, you just need to be free to define yourself and be who you are.  Being ‘Brown’ is about not conforming to labels and categories or being frightened of ‘difference’.  To be ‘Brown’ is to accept yourself and love yourself and to accept others and love them for who they are too. ‘Brown’ is not a colour but a concept, therefore you can be ‘Brown’ too!

Loretta

Loretta is Brown. She loves music and life in general. She hates injustice and the word 'cluster'. She has a First Class degree in Professional and Creative Writing with Media Arts. She plans to write a novel one day. She's worked as a model and a radio producer and presenter. She really wants a dog.

Natasha

Natasha is Brown. She has a passion for singing & music, loves to dance & enjoys song-writing which she sees as her therapy. She works as a Vocal Coach along side her singing & would like to live in France for a time to master the language. She loves laughter and deep & meaningfuls, Christmas-time (she's such a big kid) yet has a passion to make a difference in the world. She thinks muesli & flapjacks are the best thing ever but is a bit of a chocolate-monster and is basically full of contradictions! (Though she prefers to be thought of as 'enigmatic')

Johann

Johann is Brown. He sings and plays guitar, but also has an obsession with trying, buying and hoarding all kinds of different musical instruments. Like Lor, he too has a first class degree (in Computing), and worked in an investment bank for three years - although he thrives on challenge, he has no plans to do either of those ever again!

He enjoys teaching and writing music, and trying to outdo the silliness of the Brown twins. He is apparently pretty good at the first two, and is gradually learning that the third may be beyond his ability.
